One specific airport in the Los Angeles metropolitan area is widely celebrated for its remarkably short security lines, quick curb-to-gate transition, and classic airstairs used to board flights. To be absolutely clear, this efficient hub is definitely not Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) offers one of the most seamless, stress-free travel experiences available in a major metropolitan region. Even though its historic 1930s-era building remains highly functional and compact, local officials realized over a decade ago that the facility desperately required a comprehensive modernization. The primary motivation for this massive reconstruction project extended far beyond mere visual upgrades to focus heavily on modern safety guidelines. The historic terminal is located a mere 250 feet from active runways, which falls short of contemporary FAA regulations, and the old structure predates current seismic safety and accessibility building codes.
The architectural design concept, officially named "The Icon," draws direct inspiration from the famous entertainment capital it serves. Lammerding noted that community feedback indicated a strong desire for the building to reflect the classic glitz and glamour of Hollywood, which ultimately became the foundational theme for the entire aesthetic.
When arriving at the facility, passengers will notice a glittering, "premiere night" lighting effect illuminating the building's exterior facade. On the inside, beautiful terrazzo flooring is embedded with custom shapes that mimic classic movie spotlights, while the overhead canopy supports are styled to look like Hollywood searchlights. Rotating artwork created by local artisans will also be displayed throughout the corridors, changing every six months.

However, the upcoming facility is much more than just a visually appealing architectural landmark. A brand-new garage will dramatically expand BUR Airport parking capabilities, offering over 2,000 stalls right in front of the terminal – a massive upgrade from the roughly 500 close-in spaces available today – and will feature dedicated EV charging stations. Interestingly, the new layout will completely lack traditional airline lounges, which represents a highly deliberate design choice by planners. Lammerding emphasized that the goal was to make the entire terminal feel open and lounge-like, eliminating the need for travelers to flee the main concourse just to find a relaxing environment.
Every passenger will get to enjoy full-height windows lining the corridors and departure gates, which perfectly frame expansive views of the nearby Verdugo Mountains. Even the public restrooms are receiving a substantial overhaul based on customer feedback. Lammerding pointed out that restroom cleanliness and space are actually the highest-scoring factors on global airport satisfaction surveys. Because high-quality restrooms play a massive role in how travelers rate their favorite domestic hubs, the updated BUR facilities will feature significantly more stalls, larger individual spaces, and private, dedicated rooms for nursing mothers and families.
Despite all of these significant infrastructure updates, one iconic structural detail is consciously being preserved. Burbank's most recognizable, nostalgic quirk has always been walking outside across the open tarmac to climb the steps directly onto the aircraft. This process mirrors the exact way passengers boarded commercial flights during the golden era when the original terminal was first constructed. Janie Mills, the senior manager of design integration at Holder Construction – the firm tasked with building the project – noted that this unique feature beautifully harkens back to vintage Hollywood style.
The upcoming terminal will strictly maintain a total of 14 gates, meaning passengers shouldn't anticipate a sudden surge of new flights or increased congestion at the airport. Currently, BUR is actively served by 10 commercial airlines, including Southwest, Alaska, JetBlue, Delta, American, and United, providing convenient nonstop flights to more than 30 destinations across the country, primarily located throughout the western United States.
